I don’t wanna be dramatic, but I know the secret to change.
Of course, it isn’t much of a secret; the truth is foolishly simple. Here goes:
The secret to big life changes is small behavioural changes.
Yep. That’s it. No big revelation today. Are you a little disappointed?
But seriously, a lot of people want to change their lives, but don’t realize that it starts with how they live their lives.
Let’s not call it that, though. It makes it sound so grand, and it really isn’t. What I’m talking about is making itty-bitty tweaks to some of the things you do on a day-to-day basis.
Let’s use an example. Say you want to be healthier (don’t we all!). Well, of course you will need to start eating well, adopt a regular exercise regime, and ditch those bad habits. But whoa! All of a sudden, that’s a huge undertaking. It’s no wonder a lot of people become overwhelmed by the magnitude of the challenge in front of them. And why so many people don’t follow through.
But it doesn’t have to be that way. Changing your life doesn’t start with, well, changing your life. It starts small. If you want to be healthier, maybe try going for a walk today. If it feels good, you can try it again tomorrow. You don’t have to throw your chips and dip and other tasty snacks in the garbage, but next time you’re grocery shopping, try a veggie or fruit you don’t usually buy.
These are small changes. Anyone could manage them, and it’s hard to imagine them having a life-altering effect. But if you wake up each day and try to implement them, eventually a magical thing happens: your life changes.
Why? Because you become the things you do. Behaviour is what matters.
That’s the secret to change.
